Fall Fashion Must-Haves

September 22, 2015

Let’s face it, fall is the best season of them all. No, it’s not because of the pumpkin spiced lattes or the Thanksgiving turkey dinners; it’s the comfy sweaters, knee-high boots, and layers upon layers of cozy goodness. As soon as the temperature starts to drop (although, in Saskatchewan, the weather has a mind of its own) and the leaves begin to turn a golden tinge, all I can think about is throwing on my snug cardigan and taking a walk downtown to meet up with friends for coffee, or in my case, a soy milk, sugar-free vanilla London Fog. To kick off the First Day of Autumn, I am sharing my favourite garments for fall and how you can pair them with other items in your closet to create a stand-out look.

PLAID   Plaid is my go-to fall fashion favourite. I secretly wish it was mandatory to wear plaid for the entire season. Although plaid comes in almost all colours, I am a sucker for the classic. Something about the vibrant, lumberjack-esque red gives me that warm, cozy feeling as soon as I put it on. And the best thing about plaid is that you can use it as a wardrobe staple to create more than one look. Pair your plaid with a faux fur vest, black leggings, and top off with a pair of tall grey riding boots. Or, try plaid tucked into your favourite pair of dark denim jeans.

TRENCH COAT   My latest obsession: the trench. Never have I ever cared about what my fall jacket looked like, until now. I cannot get over how adorable and versatile the trench coat is! It exudes a professional vibe, yet is comfortable and classy for weekend errands or a night out with the beau (or girlfriends!). A neutral, beige trench is an easy layering piece paired with a plain white or grey tee and jeans for a relaxed and effortless look.

CHAMBRAY   I didn’t grow up in an “authentic” small town, but I love the country lifestyle. And, the #1 essential for a country girl’s closet is a chambray shirt. I have attended a ton of country music concerts in the last few years and have noticed my fellow country ladies are reviving the denim-on-demin trend from the ‘90’s. Chambray button ups are a modern twist on the denim jacket and pair well with a variety of pieces of all textures and colours. What I once thought was a “fashion faux pas”, now seems to be one of my favourite looks for fall. A light chambray shirt works well tucked into dark denim jeans. Add a cream or grey cardigan to create a casual, comfy look. Swap your dark denim jeans with white pants for a work-friendly uniform.

CC Style Tip: Invest in versatile items that can be paired with other pieces in your closet to provide you with multiple looks and can carry you into the next season. There are far too many cute fall trends to try them all on the ordinary girl’s budget.
