Resolutions - Healthy Eating

January 08, 2015

Do you make New Year’s Resolutions? I do. I really enjoy taking the time to reflect on the past year and decide what I want to do differently or better going forward. Each week over the next month, I’ll be writing about one of my resolutions and some of the ways I plan to achieve it in 2015.

Resolutions – Healthy Eating

Eating a healthier diet is one of the Top 10 New Year’s Resolutions year after year. After I’ve indulged in turkey dinner, cocktails, and Grandma’s baking over the holidays the New Year is the perfect time to reset and get into a healthier eating routine. Healthy eating in our busy and rushed world can be tough, so I decided to do a bit of research to make it easier.

There are three things that really stood out to me when I was researching the healthy options available at Cornwall Centre:

1 – There is a large selection available for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or a snack.

2 – The options available are made with FRESH ingredients.

3 -  Every one of the restaurants/stores featured was founded in Canada…that’s pretty cool!

Here are some of the great tasting, healthy choices that I’ll be eating and drinking this year:

With two young kids at home, I’m always running a bit behind and I skip breakfast way too often which sets me up to overindulge later in the day. The other morning I got a breakfast egg pocket, freshly pressed juice and coffee from Freshii and trust me when I say, “It was GOOD!”

The idea behind Freshii was to create a restaurant that helped people all over the world live healthier and longer lives by making healthy food affordable and convenient. Enter fibre-rich, slow-burning carbs, essential fats and lean proteins; the menu includes custom-made green wraps, salads, quinoa bowls, burritos, fresh pressed juices, and smoothies.

Bonus: Freshii offers vegetarian and vegan options plus menu items that are nut & seed, shellfish, soy and/or gluten free.

Check out their menu and nutritional information here.

Extreme Pita

Something I love about Extreme Pita is that they make kid meals, and my kids actually like them! A healthy selection of food and beverages that isn’t the typical hot dog and fries option.

For me there are pita wraps, flatbaked pitas (pizza version), and salads - I’m quickly finding some healthy and delicious favourites. Everything is made to order so if you’re picky, you can choose the toppings you want! I found their Nutritional Guides with calorie, fat, carb, sodium content and more on their website.

Last time I went to Extreme Pita I tried a Purblendz. They are all natural smoothies made with 100% fruit juice, frozen fruit, fresh veggies and all natural supplements. There are no added sugars, sweeteners, or yogurts making these smoothies both gluten and dairy free, and all natural with no fillers.

Booster Juice

Known for their beverage options like smoothies and fresh-squeezed Juices, Booster Juice also offers convenient and delicious hot food like fresh-made panini, quesadillas and wraps.

At Booster Juice you’ll also find High Protein options as well as Superfoods like Wheatgrass, Kale, energizing Japanese Matcha Green Tea and Açaí, the Brazilian power berry. Select among a number of Boosters to add to your smoothie to give you a boost of Energy, Fibre, Calcium, Echinacea, Protein and so much more!

I like Booster Juice a lot for breakfast or a snack. I started adding the Energy booster when I get an afternoon smoothie – it gives me extra energy into the evening. Whenever my kids are getting a little peckish during an afternoon shopping trip, a 'Strawberry Sunshine' always brightens them up.

Visit their website to find the nutritional information for all their beverage, food and booster options.

Pop into DAVIDsTEA and choose from over 150 types of tea, including exclusive blends, seasonal collections, traditional straight teas and exotic infusions from around the globe. I recently discovered that they have the largest collection of organic teas and infusions in North America!

Do you get that mid-afternoon sweets craving? I was wondering why that is and discovered it could be caused by stress, fatigue, boredom or eating an inadequate lunch/skipping breakfast. Instead of having a chocolate bar or can of pop, DAVIDsTEA has a solution! Give ‘Read My Lips’ (a chocolate mint dessert tea), ‘Red Velvet Cake’ (self explanatory), or any number of their dessert teas a try.

Feeling under the weather? How about ‘Cold 911’ or ‘Detox’? Cold 911 is an organic blend of peppermint, juniper berries and apple with a soothing citrus and mint aroma. Detox is also organic and gives your system a reboot with rooibos, sencha, ginger, ginkgo, lemongrass, and juniper berries.

Umi Sushi

Umi Sushi is committed to offering healthy, fresh Japanese-inspired cuisine and I really like that Umi Sushi uses local ingredients and makes as much food as possible fresh in-house.

The fish in sushi provides you with a low-calorie, high quality protein that is low in saturated fats and cholesterol. I’ll be opting for the salmon and tuna rolls as both are high in Omega-3 Fatty Acids - good for brain and heart health.

Did you know that even seaweed is healthy? Nori contains a number of minerals including Iodine, magnesium, calcium, and iron. You’ll also get a dose of antioxidant phytonutrients and folic acid from eating sushi rolls wrapped in nori.

If you are a ‘sushi-beginner’ give the Avocado, Cucumber or Green Dragon (yam tempura roll, draped with fresh avocado) rolls a try.

Zam Zam Wraps

Zam Zam Wraps are made with Tanour whole grain bread which has ZERO cholesterol, trans or saturated fat - it also has no preservatives!  Select roasted Beef, roasted Lamb, chicken Shawarma or Falafel (vegan) topped with your choice of fresh veggies for a healthy, tasty option.

Looking for something Vegan? Look no further, Zam Zam Wraps offers Vegan Tabouli Salad, Zotatoes, Hummos, Lentil Soup, Falafel, Zaatar Pie, Spinach Pie, and Mixed Veggie Pie. And guess what?! They’re just $2.50 each including tax!

There are many more healthy options throughout Cornwall Centre’s Food Court. If you want to know more, visit their websites…most have easily accessible nutritional information so you can be equipped with information on both your healthy days and your cheat days.
